Welcome to the second Horizon ENLIGHTENED newsletter! We are now one year into the project and recently concluded a consortium meeting in Nuremberg. It was an i an inspiring opportunity to review our progress and align on the path ahead. We were also pleased to welcome new colleagues to the project—Andrii from FAU and Sanna from Pricer—who bring fresh perspectives and valuable expertise. A warm welcome!
The first year of ENLIGHTENED has been dedicated to setting and aligning expectations, with end-user requirements playing a central role in guiding the project. This has laid a solid foundation for progress, and we are now beginning to see initial results across several areas. From advances in material chemistry to early prototype testing and environmental impact assessments, the project has covered a wide range of topics. A series of meetings and workshops have further supported this collaborative work, ensuring that developments remain aligned across disciplines. Looking forward, preparations are already underway for the half-time review in February 2026, with a number of concrete actions set to be finalized in advance.
The months ahead will focus on preparing for the half-time review, advancing the next set of technical milestones, and continuing to share updates with stakeholders across Europe and beyond.
The September consortium meeting underscored the importance of physical gatherings. In-person exchanges allowed space for both in-depth technical discussions and informal one-on-one conversations that strengthen collaboration. The agenda included a guided tour of the solar cell printing line at Energie Campus Nuremberg (EnCN), which provided valuable insights into ongoing work. The meeting concluded with a dinner at a traditional Franconian restaurant, where the consortium enjoyed local specialties. With clear next steps defined, the project remains firmly on track, and the next full consortium meeting is scheduled for spring 2026.

The first iteration of the printed flexboard
There's many great individuals making the ENLIGHTENED project possible and pushing the innovations of printed, flexible electronics. Meet one of them, Anders Elfwing who is the main coordinator of the ENLIGHTENED project.
My name is Anders Elfwing and in this role as a project coordinator I focus on connecting all the dots and ensuring that the project moves forward at the right pace. I am based in Sweden and bring a background from the biotechnology industry, along with a PhD in Physics.
I am also one of the co-founder of Epishine who manages the ENLIGHTENED project, where I sometimes describe my role as a “Passion Manager.” Outside of work, you can often find me at the kitchen table painting Warhammer figures or out in the woods picking mushrooms (the non-magical kind!). I live in Linköping together with my wife Cecilia, two of my teenagers, and two bonus teenagers.

On 9 September 2025, consortium partner Pricer published an article highlighting how ENLIGHTENED technology can help power the future of retail without relying on conventional batteries. Their contribution illustrates how organic photovoltaic technology can provide sustainable, reliable solutions for applications such as electronic shelf labels, reducing environmental impact while ensuring consistent performance.
